Job Summary

Mechanics perform skilled assembly, modification, inspection, and repair of roadway equipment machinery used in railroad operations.

This role requires advanced proficiency in operating heavy equipment and the safe, effective use of a wide range of industrial tools, precision instruments, and diagnostic equipment. Mechanics ensure the reliability, functionality, and safe performance of locomotive and heavy-equipment components essential to daily operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate measuring instruments, precision machinery, hand tools, and material-handling equipment—including forklifts, cranes, and overhead hoists—in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Communicate technical information, job briefings, procedural recommendations, and other work-related details clearly and effectively through verbal communication, written documentation, telephone, radio, and intercom systems.
  • Read, interpret, and apply information from diagrams, schematics, graphs, and charts; enter data and documentation into computer systems as required.
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and materials are properly maintained, available, and ready for use to support operational needs.
  • Diagnose malfunctions in air-brake systems and other mechanical issues related to roadway equipment machinery used in railroad operations.
  • Perform assembly, modification, inspection, and repair of roadway equipment machinery in accordance with technical specifications, safety standards, and operational requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support maintenance and operational objectives.

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age by the anticipated start date.
  • Ability to report to the designated work location as required.
  • Ability to work safely under the environmental and operational conditions described.
  • Ability to work assigned shifts and any shift required by operational needs.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements as needed.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 60 lbs without assistance.
  • Ability to visually distinguish red, blue, green, yellow, and clear (lunar) indicator lights.
  • Ability to recognize and differentiate verbal and non-verbal sounds such as alarms and signals.
  • Ability to use hands and hand tools for grasping, turning, pulling, and other manual tasks.
  • Ability to climb ladders and safely get on and off equipment.
  • Ability to bend, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to occasionally work at elevated heights, including on top of locomotives or other equipment.
  • Ability to provide documentation of work experience, training, and education for evaluation.
